Edwin Evers relies heavily on walking topwater baits to quickly comb water and target bigger bass. Not all walking baits are created equal though – those that offer sound, casting distance and the ability to cut hard and maintain a longer presence in the strike zone open up the range of applications.
Contrary to what many think, walking baits can excel in wind conditions. Lures with internal rattles call fish from further away and especially so when worked aggressively with more surface commotion. Select baits that cut hard from side to side. This reduces forward motion, keeping the lure in the strike zone longer – an important attribute when calling bass from specific cover elements. Lastly, Edwin stresses the importance of making long casts and varying retrieve speeds to draw fish to the bait and trigger reaction strikes.
